The Lovexair Foundation is launching a new platform to raise awareness, educate, and educate about chronic cough. It thus gives new impetus to its commitment to people living with this condition, which significantly impacts their daily lives and often goes unrecognized in the social and healthcare spheres.
With the launch of the project “HappyAir Chronic Cough”We seek to generate knowledge, awareness, and dialogue about this condition, bringing together the voices of those who experience it every day and the healthcare professionals who address it in their clinical practice.
Impact of chronic cough
A chronic cough is defined as one that lasts for more than eight weeks. It may have an identified cause—as in the case of chronic respiratory diseases or gastroesophageal reflux disease—in which case it is called a "specific cough." When the cause cannot be determined, it is classified as a "nonspecific" or "idiopathic" cough. There is also a "refractory cough," which persists despite adequate treatment.
This condition is often underdiagnosed, both in children and adults, making it difficult to determine its true prevalence. In Spain, it is estimated that between 5,5% and 7% of the population suffers from a chronic or persistent cough, while international studies suggest it could affect up to 20% of people.
A strategy with two main axes
The HappyAir Chronic Cough proposal is based on two main strategic lines:
- Education: Development of quality content and practical, free resources that help people better understand chronic cough, its possible causes, and daily treatment and management options.
- Communication and dissemination: Activation of campaigns that bring this reality closer to society and promote conversation in different spaces and channels among interested people (patients, caregivers or family members, and healthcare professionals).
Key components of the campaign
To achieve these objectives, various actions have been designed:
- Creation of a website with exclusive content adapted to the real and specific needs of people living with a chronic or persistent cough.
- Test “Know the impact of chronic cough”, a short, free online questionnaire that helps people understand the impact of coughing on their daily lives. Upon completing the form, people receive a report of their results by email, which they can share with their doctor for guidance on their specific case.
- Outreach campaigns on social media, with clear and visual messages aimed at both people affected by chronic or persistent cough and the general community.
- Educational emailing with content written in a simple and non-technical manner to effectively reach patients and/or caregivers.
- Omnichannel diffusion, with messages accessible on the web, social media, in the press, and on newsletters, which will help raise the profile of this condition on the public health agenda.
A diverse and engaged community
One of the pillars of the project is the active participation of people living with chronic cough. Such is the case of Maria Esther, who shares her story in a series of videos chronicling her journey from seeking a diagnosis to consulting with various specialists. She also describes the strategies and resources she incorporated over time to reduce the impact of this condition and keep her daily life as stable as possible.
In addition, professionals from various disciplines will collaborate, including primary care physicians, pulmonologists, physical therapists, and speech therapists, who will contribute their knowledge and comprehensive perspective.
A sustained commitment
This new project builds on the work the Lovexair Foundation has been developing for years around chronic cough, thus reinforcing our role as a meeting point for patients, healthcare professionals, industry leaders, and society at large.
