A large group of representatives from the first batch of HappyAir patients met on June 8 at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital to receive, from the hands of the Lovexair Foundation, recognition for their participation in the clinical study. “Effect of m-health monitoring on adherence to a comprehensive treatment plan of education, physical activity and respiratory physiotherapy in patients with COPD”The group represented the 44 patients in total who participated in the study carried out in three hospitals in Madrid: the San Carlos Clinical Hospital and the 12 de Octubre and La Princesa University Hospitals.

Once their participation has ended, and while the final results of the study are finalized, the first conclusions of the study point to an improvement in adherence to treatment, quality of life and the positive perception of their own health by patients and relatives .

The good results were corroborated during the day both by the patients present and by the health professionals who attended the meeting, some of them as study participants. Both groups highlighted the importance of using the HappyAir m-health program to improve adherence to treatment and the possibilities it offers when it comes to empowering the patient, since they end up having greater knowledge about their disease, treatment and self-management.

The advantages of the project

The conference had the collaboration of Jaime del Barrio, Senior Advisor in the Life Sciences area of Ernst & Young and President of the Asociación Salud Digital, who together with Leonor Pérez, Director of Corporate Development and Communication of the Lovexair Foundation, carried out an enthusiastic discussion on the development of this study.

During the discussion, healthcare professionals participating in the study indicated that the role of the educator who guides the patient in their daily care plan and intervenes when uncertain situations arise, together with the use of the HappyAir application, contributed significantly to improving patient adherence to treatment, mainly in those patients who initially showed lower adherence. “Thanks to this program, the patient is better monitored and does not have to come to the hospital as often.”, highlighted Myriam Calle, a pulmonologist at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital.

Likewise, the attendees pointed out that the success of this program is due, to a great extent, to the support provided by a respiratory physiotherapist in her role as an educator in digital health and active life, who at all times has shown her support for patients, responding quickly and efficiently to all their consultations and training them in techniques to learn how to use digital health tools and autonomously manage their pathology paying attention to respiratory physiotherapy.

Many of the patients supported the advantages of the program, acknowledging -some of them- the lower use of oxygen since they participated in it and others arguing the fact that the application forces the patient to discipline himself and take care of himself through the practice of exercise with the educator support.

improvement phase

After receiving feedback and evaluations from patients, health professionals and the internal Lovexair team over 12 months, the HappyAir m-health program is considering the necessary improvements for phase II. With the aim of putting in the hands of users the necessary resources to take better care of themselves, which thanks to these programs are available to everyone in the management of their chronic illness.

The plan is to identify and advance with the collaboration of partners who value the important role of digital health in empowering the patient and supporting healthcare professionals with complicated co-morbidity conditions.

In this new framework, the role of patient organizations is key to being a bridge and we strengthen the patient-doctor relationship with our own specialized educators.

It will also embark on launching training programs for educators specialized in guiding chronic respiratory patients in a more active life.

first promotion

At the end of the day, all the patients expressed their interest in continuing with the program after completing the study. In recognition of their participation, this first promotion of HappyAir patients received, from Jaime del Barrio and Shane Fitch, president of the Lovexair Foundation, a diploma accrediting them as the first patients to have participated in the first edition of the m -Health HappyAir.

In summary, this meeting served to highlight the importance of involving health professionals and patients when developing this type of programme. On the one hand, health professionals see in this type of tool solutions that contribute to improving the supervision of their patients in their own environment; and patients become aware of the need to lead a more active and healthy life.
