• adherence to the treatment and quality of life are the main variables analyzed in this study

  • The healthcare professional points out the importance of using digital health tools to improve patient monitoring and comprehensive care

Madrid, June 6, 2017.- On the occasion of the completion of the study “Effect of monitoring using m-health on adherence to a comprehensive treatment plan of education, physical activity and respiratory physiotherapy in patients with COPD”, the Lovexair Foundation is holding a meeting between healthcare professionals, patients and family members on June 8 at the San Carlos Clinical Hospital. The purpose of this meeting is to inform all attendees of the benefits of incorporating the use of digital health programs in order to improve adherence to treatment in patients suffering from a chronic respiratory disease.

This study, carried out in three hospitals in Madrid (Hospital Clínico San Carlos, Hospital Universitario Doce de Octubre, and Hospital Universitario La Princesa), involved the participation of 44 volunteer patients with COPD grade II, III and IV on the GOLD scale, in a stable clinical condition. The participants have an average age of 69 years, and to carry out the study they were divided into two groups: a control group and an intervention group.

Both groups had previously received pulmonary rehabilitation, but only the intervention group followed the HappyAir m-health programme. The patient continues his daily care plan through an app, in addition to maintaining daily contact with a HappyAir therapeutic educator (respiratory physiotherapist). This healthcare professional, specialised in respiratory health, is trained to monitor the patient's progress and guide them in learning how to self-manage their disease.

Pending the final results, the preliminary evaluation of the study shows that thanks to the use of the m-health HappyAir program, patients improve their adherence to treatment. On the other hand, the study researchers point out that, according to the partial results, the program contributes to improving the quality of life of patients with COPD, a lung disease that is currently the third cause of death in the world. Furthermore, according to data from the EPI-SCAN study published in 2009, the global prevalence of COPD in the Spanish population is 10,2%. These figures indicate the need to implement training programs, since a high percentage of patients have not yet been diagnosed.

For this reason, although the study has just finished and the results are not definitive, both healthcare professionals and patients agree on the importance of accessing this type of program, since they allow for better monitoring and control of the disease, as well as helping to overcome the lack of knowledge that users have about their pathology.

In this regard, it is worth highlighting that adherence to treatment and the quality of life of these patients have been the main causes analysed in this study. In turn, this management model allows for greater support to be offered to the patient and guarantees the sustainability of the healthcare system.

The Foundation works to implement training programmes aimed at healthcare professionals, patients and their families to reduce the lack of knowledge about respiratory diseases.

In this way, the Lovexair Foundation is consolidating its position as a non-profit institution that is a benchmark in digital health. Lovexair is committed to incorporating programs that allow healthcare professionals to offer a faster and more efficient service, which leads to true patient empowerment.
